Fire & Explosion Hazards - Dusts and Powders

In the UK, fires and explosions are a major cause of loss and damage in the process industry. Many of these incidents involve combustible dusts and powders (Over 70% of powders handled in the process industry are combustible and can cause fire or explosions).  It is essential therefore, that personnel responsible understand the fundamental principles of how the hazards can develop and how they can be controlled.

The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) came into force on 9th December 2002. DSEAR requires employers to take all necessary measures to ensure the health and safety of workers where dangerous substances, including combustible dusts and powders, are being handled. Requirements have been established regarding employer and worker responsibilities and training, safety systems and procedures and technical risk assessment.

This course is designed to give you an appreciation of fire and explosion hazards. You will learn how to identify, assess and combat potential risks in accordance with DSEAR standards. We will provide practical advice that will be easy to implement to help prevent loss and ultimately, protect profit.

Learning objectives

  • The requirements of the Regulations
  • Responsibilities and procedures/systems required
  • The flammability data required for powders and dusts
  • How to identify potential hazards
  • How to classify hazardous areas for dust handling processes
  • How to identify potential ignition sources
